One of my favorite things about knitting is the ability to create entire garments without a single seam. There are dozens of ways to knit a sweater seamlessly, and most of the differences lie in the shoulder construction. Barbara Walker and Elizabeth Zimmermann were visionaries, perfecting and publishing their favorite shoulder construction methods. With knitting’s recent resurgence in popularity, several new designers, such as Heidi Kirrmaier and Joji Locatelli, have developed their own innovations in seamless shoulder shapes.
In these pages I plan to chronicle my own discoveries of interesting and innovative seamless knitting techniques, particularly as they pertain to shoulder construction. While sweater shapes are limited by the shape of the human body, the methods of creating those shapes are seemingly infinite, with new tricks being “unvented” all the time.
